Near future… The world has been struck by the climate crisis! Something like an apocalypse has happened—but not quite! Out of the chaos emerged nomadic groups known as the Parasites—people unwanted by any nation.
One boy: Diyar! He’s a storyteller of this new world. Each night, by the fire, he tells the Parasites tales of the early days of the apocalypse, beating his darbuka as he spins his story.
A story of betrayal!
The first days of the climate crisis! We’re in Istanbul! A massive uprising fueled by hunger and famine! And a conservative movement—İzan—that turns crisis into opportunity.
And then, the mysterious girl who changes Diyar’s whole story: Leyla!
In a time of great fires, diseases, migrations, feverish heat, hunger, and thirst, one question rises above all others: As the world we know slips away, whose hand will we hold? Who will we walk beside?
“That night, the first bombs went off! The ground shook beneath our feet! We ran outside! The sky was burning red like hell itself! Flames everywhere! They must’ve hit thirty places in Istanbul at once!
‘They’re coming,’ said Leyla! There was something strange in her voice… like fear, but not quite…
‘Who’s coming?’ I asked—she didn’t answer. Didn’t even look back.
I did though! The fire lit up her face! Her black hair glowed red! Flames were swirling in her eyes like whirlpools!
I forgot about the fire. Because love—love is being able to look at just one person while whole cities burn.”
